Profile
For over 50 years the independent cultural organization SZENE Salzburg has had a significant artistic influence, presenting art that breaks boundaries and creates innovative formats in Salzburg. SZENE Salzburg moved to the former Stadtkino on Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the heart of the old quarter in 1986. Since being settled there its work has been focused on four key areas:
The annual Sommerszene festival is a platform for contemporary performing arts that brings outstanding international and national artists working in the fields of performance, dance, theatre, visual arts and music to Salzburg. Through a variety of formats and venues, the invited projects explore current social issues and developments and open up new perspectives for public discourse.
The multi-functional performance space offers a diverse range of over 120 events a year representing all artistic disciplines with a combined audience of over 120,000 people. The diverse program includes dance, theater, concerts, readings, lectures, cabaret, comedy, as well as theater for children and teens, club events, and dance parties. It regularly collaborates with other organizations including the Salzburg Festival, Rockhouse Salzburg, ARGEkultur, the Mozarteum Foundation, SEAD, the tanz_house association, Altstadt Marketing, Jazz & The City, the Literaturfest and many others. The current programme can be found here.
On a local level SZENE Salzburg supports the creative processes of regional artists by offering rehearsal and production opportunities. Independent artists are able to use a Studio on the building’s third floor free of charge which can also be used to present public showings.
On an international level SZENE Salzburg founded the European network apap – advancing performing arts project – in 2000. The new project apap – FEMINIST FUTURES is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and aims for an ambitious undertaking: initiate powerful social changes through art.
