In this mischievous creation by the Argentinian choreographer Ayelen Parolin, everything goes wrong, much to the delight of the audience: an obsessed trio tries to dance their way through Strauss’ popular waltz By the Beautiful Blue Danube and repeatedly falls out of sync. But they can’t give up, the show must go on, no matter how much chaos breaks out on stage. ZONDER is the name of this dance prank, with which Ayelen Parolin has created a great ode to senselessness, the illogical and therefore also to art. The piece debunks the pseudointellectuality of contemporary dance as well as the idea that it is the audience’s own fault if they don’t understand anything. ZONDER leads us into a happy nightmare world in which joy can be found even in failure and proves that humour is still the best way to explore the human condition – if it is as well done as in ZONDER.
