In The Slowest Urgency, the title of his latest work, the dancer, choreographer and visual artist Philipp Gehmacher combines two apparent opposites. Urgency implies the present that absorbs people, a sudden correspondence between the interior and exterior landscape. Gehmacher stretches the moment in which the wave breaks and tells of towering clouds, of the jungle that has yet to have a path beaten through it.

How does such urgency manifest itself in the body? How does it settle there or spread? For Gehmacher, who locates his movement vocabulary in theatres but also in museums, these questions are linked to a stage space that diffuses as it deepens away from the viewer. With The Slowest Urgency the Viennese artist reflects his choreographic practice, testing, sharing and handing on his language to a new generation of dancers.
