The artistic oeuvre of Rosana Ribeiro, the Portuguese-Brazilian choreographer living in Salzburg, is characterised by an independent language of movement and well-founded thematic research.

Her new production Break the Dam, which will premiere at SOMMERSZENE festival, follows five dancers as they move from a state of bodily and environmental stagnation toward collective release.

The work traces how bracing against externally imposed impact becomes stored in both the human body and the land. Set in a post- apocalyptic, coal-like and immobile landscape, the performers deal with weight, repetition, and resistance, revealing how pressure builds when forces are held back for too long. Gradually, micro-movements ripple through the group, destabilizing rigidity and initiating transformation. As the dancersʼ energy circulates, the landscape itself appears to shift: what was once immobile, cracks open, is set into motion and becomes fluid: waves, vortices and cycles emerge.

“We stir the ground. Washing away what we need to let go.“
